There is a variety of maintenance and cleaning that come with granite countertops. While they are relatively maintenance free, there is some cleaning information you should know prior to installing these gorgeous countertops. Once per day, you should take time to clean the granite countertops with warm water and a couple drops of dish soap. After this is done, rinse with water and dry thoroughly.

For preventative maintenance, avoid leaving spills on your granite for prolonged periods of time so you don’t wind up with a stain. If your countertops have been sealed properly, they should be relatively stain resistant. You should avoid heat exposure and do not cut on your granite countertops. While they are extremely durable and are likely to withstand both of these, there could come a time when they won’t and you will end up with serious damage.

What happens if you get a stain on your granite countertops? Proper stain removal is crucial to not only removing the stain but making sure that you do it properly to avoid damage. If necessary, use a stone poultice to extract stains from your countertops. You can use this on porous and non-porous surfaces. If you end up needing the stone poultice you may notice it removes some of the shine. If this happens to you, don’t fret. It can be remedied by buffing with marble polish to return the granite back to its original shine.

Finally, you should know the basics about sealing. Granite countertops are able to maintain their resistance through proper sealing. You can do this yourself or you can hire a professional company to complete this extremely important task. Luckily, it only needs to be done once every 15 years or so. Keeping up on sealing your countertops will make sure that they last for an entire lifetime and stay looking beautiful year after year.
